2,500-year-old golden helmet recovered after dramatic heist

In a dramatic breakthrough authorities have finally cracked the high-profile museum heist that shocked Europe, recovering priceless Romanian artifacts stolen in a daring early-morning robbery in January 2025.

The theft, which took place at the Drents Museum in the Netherlands, saw criminals storm the building using explosives to break in before making off with some of Romania’s most treasured historical items. The bold and calculated operation quickly grabbed global attention, raising fears that the stolen artifacts could be lost forever.

At the heart of the recovery is a 2,500-year-old golden helmet from the ancient Dacian civilization a symbol of Romania’s cultural identity and one of its most valuable national treasures. Alongside it several gold bracelets were also taken during the heist.

After an intense 14-month investigation involving cross-border intelligence, diplomatic coordination, and legal action against three suspects most of the stolen items have now been successfully recovered.

The artifacts were flown to Bucharest’s Henri Coandă International Airport and transferred under heavy security to the National History Museum, where they are now displayed in reinforced glass cases under armed guard.

Despite the success the case still holds an air of mystery. One of the gold bracelets remains missing and authorities continue their search for the final piece of the stolen collection.

Museum director Robert van Lang described the theft as a deeply distressing moment particularly for the Romanian public given the immense cultural value of the artifacts. However he noted that their return has brought a wave of relief and national pride.

The heist had sparked widespread concern that the golden helmet might be melted down for profit. Fortunately, officials confirmed that the artifact suffered only minor damage, while the recovered bracelets remain in near-perfect condition.

While much of the stolen heritage has been reclaimed, the case remains partially unsolved keeping the suspense alive in one of Europe’s most gripping art crime stories.
