Why fans fell for scammers impersonating Reese Witherspoon?

Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon on Wednesday warned her fans against scammers impersonating her.
In a video statement released on TikTok, the 49-year-old asked fans to avoid engaging with fake accounts posing as her.
“I want to just tell you what I’ve been dealing with for the past 24 hours. “There are multiple people on TikTok and Instagram impersonating me, and they go into people’s DMs, and they try to build a relationship, they try to extract personal information, plan meet up times,” Witherspoon said.
She added, “I want you to know, this is not me. And it’s so upsetting that people would use my name to manipulate people, but I want you to know that I would never, ever manipulate you,” Witherspoon said, noting that she “would never reach out to you for money, for private information, to create a meet up time.”
The actress, however, did not disclose what exactly she’d been through for the past 24 hours.
Reese’s statement came months after Reese Witherspoon and Harlan Coben released their bestselling thriller novel, Gone Before Goodbye.
The novel co-authored by Witherspoon and Harlan Coben was released in late 2025.
Shortly after it was released some of her fans shared their experience of attending an event featuring the actress and her co-author.
A fan said “Did a paid meet and greet in St. Louis with Reese Witherspoon and Harlan Coben because they have written a book together. Really did it for Reese since I’m not a big reader , and got to say I was kinda disappointed.”
“First of all, I won’t get the photo that was a part of my paid experience until whenever they email it to me, and no timeline for when this might happen was shared with the venue. Second, Reese chose to stand on one side of Harlan while each fan stood on the other side of him for the pictures. I mean, technically it was advertised as a picture with Harlan and Reese, and we all got a picture with Harlan and Reese (or we will whenever it gets sent to us), but for $450 I feel like it would have been nice to get to be in the middle of them. Finally, Reese being on the far side of Harlan meant that there was minimal interaction with Reese. Harlan greeted me and asked how I was doing. Reese kinda stood watching on with a smile on her face and said nothing. I wasn’t expecting a 5-10 minute chat, but I did expect that she’d at least say hi. It felt more like I actually had a meet and greet with Harlan while Reese randomly tagged along.”
After Reese Witherspoon warns fans about the scammers using her name, those who had attended events related to her novel were instantly convinced why some of her fans may have fallen for the fraud.
They believe her fans might have thought the actress actually approached them for a meet and greet with her and lost money in the process.
The actress, however, has made it clear that she will never reach out to her fans for money.
