Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy announces 10 filmmakers | The Express Tribune

Coveted filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy has revealed the lineup of 10 talented women filmmakers chosen for the latest instalment of Patakha Pictures’ filmmaking mentorship and funding program, “Her Earth Advocates.” The initiative, now in its fifth iteration, focuses on the urgent theme of climate change, aiming to amplify diverse voices in addressing one of the most pressing issues of our time.

Under the guidance of internationally acclaimed documentary filmmaker Jesse Ericka Epstein, winner of the prestigious Sundance Award, the fellows will embark on a journey of learning and creation through a series of online mentorship workshops. These sessions will kick off in late April and extend throughout the seven-month program, culminating in an immersive editing and closing event in Karachi in October 2024.

The selected filmmakers, paired in dynamic duos, represent a diverse spectrum of backgrounds and perspectives, promising an intriguing blend of creativity and storytelling. Maira Pasha and Shifa Rajput bring their unique vision and experience to the table. Nadia Zartaj and Nagina Jabeen offer a fusion of their specific talents.

Furthermore, Natasha Javed and Nirmal Bano, with their individual strengths, are set to collaborate on projects that challenge conventions and provoke thought. Sabika Noor Ali and Namrah Sikandar bring a fresh perspective, infused with their passion for storytelling. Lastly, Saro Imran and Zareen Rajpoot, with their complementary skills, embark on a journey to weave tales that evoke empathy and spark conversations.

Patakha Pictures’ initiative is rooted in a commitment to empower emerging Pakistani storytellers, providing them with both financial support and expert guidance to craft compelling narratives that resonate with global audiences. “Her Earth Advocates” represents the latest effort in this endeavour, building on the success of three previous cycles and one ongoing program.

Since its inception in 2022, Patakha Pictures’ mentorship programs have already made significant strides, funding 30 filmmakers and producing 16 impactful films. These projects have earned recognition both locally and internationally, amassing a total of 16 awards and gracing the screens of over 30 esteemed film festivals worldwide, including those in Pakistan, England, India, and the USA. Notable events include the All Asian Independent Film Festival and the South Asian Film Festival of Australia.
