Police release car driver on ‘personal surety’ in DHA accident case

KARACHI: A car driver, whose reckless driving claimed the life of a young delivery rider in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) on Monday, was released on ‘personal surety’ on Tuesday without being charged, officials said.
Videos that went viral on social media show the delivery rider, 26-year-old Farhan Ali, standing on his bike in front of a house near the main Saba Avenue signal when the speeding car flipped over and crashed into him. The delivery rider died in the incident.
On Tuesday, South DIG Syed Asad Raza told Dawn that the police “detained” the injured car driver, identified as Hasan Banghwar, and brought him to the Sahil police station for legal proceedings after his treatment.
He said he was released on ‘personal surety’ with the consent of the parents of the deceased.
Sahil SHO Hikmatullah said the police asked the deceased’s parents to give a statement to lodge an FIR. However, they told the police that they were taking the coffin to Thatta for burial and would approach the police later.
He said the car involved in the accident and the motorbike had been seized by the police.
He said investigations were under way and formal legal proceedings would be initiated depending upon the parents’ willingness to pursue the case legally.
