Palestinian journalists tortured in Israeli prisons, report

More than 200 journalists were killed during Israel’s two-year war in Gaza.

A recent report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) suggests alarming abuses faced by Palestinian journalists detained by Israeli authorities amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The CPJ collected 59 testimonies from media professionals since October 7, 2023, with nearly all recounting experiences of torture, sexual assault, and hunger. Overall, Israel has detained at least 94 Palestinian journalists during the two-year conflict, including 60 from the West Bank and 33 from Gaza.

Most detainees 48 individuals are held without formal charges under administrative detention, a legal process allowing imprisonment without trial. Some have been detained for over two years without due process. As of February 2026, Israeli NGO Hamoked reports over 3,300 Palestinians in administrative detention, with many classified as “illegal combatants.”

Ten journalists face charges such as incitement, anti-state activity, or terrorism promotion. Currently, 30 journalists remain in Israeli custody. The conflict has also cost the lives of over 200 media professionals, according to the United Nations.
