Pakistan’s universities to integrate artificial intelligence into core curriculum

In a transformative step towards future-ready education, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has mandated the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the curriculum of all Pakistani universities.

This pioneering move aims to equip students with cutting-edge skills essential for the digital economy, while fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and ethical AI practice.

The HEC has issued an advisory to both public and private universities, instructing that AI be made a compulsory subject in all degree programs. The directive calls for a three-credit-hour course on artificial intelligence to be taught nationwide.

Universities have been advised to design their curricula in accordance with the nature of their programs, ensuring that course content is relevant and practical.

AI courses are expected to be mandatory at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, though institutions may also offer them as optional subjects.

The curriculum will cover fundamental AI concepts, practical applications, and ethical considerations, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the technology.

HEC emphasised that this initiative is aimed at preparing students for the demands of a rapidly evolving digital landscape, with particular focus on transparency, accountability, and confidentiality in the deployment and use of AI technologies.
