Paapa Essiedu as Snape divides fans after first ‘Harry Potter’ TV teaser reveal

HBO recently released the first teaser for HBO’s upcoming series has revealing Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape
The first teaser for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series has revealed Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, prompting an immediate and divided response from fans.
The series, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, marks a full reboot of the franchise, with Essiedu stepping into the role made famous by Alan Rickman.
In the short teaser, Essiedu appears briefly, casting a spell in a dimly lit Hogwarts corridor. Though fleeting, the moment establishes a darker tone for the character. A separate still image released by HBO shows him standing alone in a snowy setting, adding to the intrigue surrounding his portrayal.
The limited reveal has led to speculation that producers are deliberately withholding more footage of Snape, a central figure in the story, to build anticipation ahead of the show’s expected release in late 2026.
Essiedu, recognised for performances in I May Destroy You and Black Mirror, has faced mixed reactions since his casting was announced. While some fans have welcomed a fresh interpretation, others have been critical due to the show’s divergence from Snape’s characterisation in the books and the implications of casting a Black man for the role.
No hook nose. No greasy hair. They should have given him straight hair. I know the sallow skin was out of the question but I thought they’d at least do something to make him seem kinda sickly?
Is he wearing a zipper? What is happening. This is the worst to come out of these… https://t.co/GI0agLkahl

What a great idea, let’s cast a black man as the kid that was hung from a tree by a group of white kids AND, also the man that is blamed for stealing something with no reason whatsoever… https://t.co/KhGN7j04ys

Speaking previously to The Times, Essiedu addressed the backlash. “I’ve been told, ‘Quit or I’ll murder you,’” he said. “I’m playing a wizard in Harry Potter. And I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t affect me emotionally.” He added, “The themes that run through Harry Potter are of love triumphing over hate — of acceptance. And that’s why I’m doing it.”
The new adaptation, developed with involvement from JK Rowling, has already attracted broader debate due to ongoing controversies surrounding the author. HBO has stated the series will focus on faithfully retelling the original story across multiple seasons.
For now, the teaser offers only a glimpse, but it has succeeded in generating discussion, with audiences closely watching how this new interpretation of Snape will unfold.
