LinkedIn emerges as a powerful influence in the AI information ecosystem

In a subtle yet consequential shift in the digital information landscape, LinkedIn is increasingly shaping how artificial intelligence chatbots formulate their responses.

Recent studies suggest that professional insights shared on the platform are now playing a growing role in the information ecosystem powering modern AI systems.

A comprehensive analysis conducted by SEMrush reviewed nearly 325,000 prompts submitted to leading AI platforms including ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity AI between January and February 2026.

Spanning twelve major industry sectors, the research revealed that LinkedIn has become the second most frequently cited source within AI-generated answers, surpassed only by Reddit.

The findings highlight an emerging reality for marketers and digital strategists: social platforms are increasingly influencing how AI systems surface information and recommendations.

A separate investigation carried out by data intelligence platform Profound analysed the most commonly referenced sources used by AI systems between November 2025 and February 2026.

The study ranked LinkedIn as the fifth most cited domain overall, underscoring the platform’s rapidly expanding presence within AI-generated content.

What makes the trend particularly striking is the speed of LinkedIn’s rise. Just three months earlier, the platform did not even appear among the top twenty sources referenced by AI tools, making its ascent one of the most dramatic shifts observed in the report.

Profound also identified LinkedIn as the single most cited platform for professional-related queries, reinforcing its growing authority in knowledge related to careers, business, and industry insights.

Earlier research by SEMrush and Spotlight had already pointed to LinkedIn articles as an increasingly influential source of information used by AI models.

Recognising the trend, LinkedIn has begun publishing guidance to help users improve the visibility of their content in AI-generated responses, encouraging professionals to optimise their profiles and posts for AI discovery.

The development reflects a broader transformation in how people search for information online. According to a 2026 report by SEO consultancy Eight Oh Two, approximately 37 per cent of consumers now begin their searches using AI-powered tools rather than traditional search engines.

As this behaviour continues to accelerate, the sources relied upon by AI platforms will increasingly determine which brands, professionals, and perspectives gain prominence in the digital space.

For social media marketers and SEO specialists, the message is becoming clear: visibility within generative AI platforms is rapidly becoming as important as traditional search engine rankings.

Within this evolving environment, LinkedIn and Reddit appear to be emerging as the two social platforms exerting the greatest influence over the information surfaced by AI systems.
