Julianne Hough reflects on big-screen return with ‘The Bride!’ after years away from film

Julianne Hough says returning to the big screen with The Bride! has reignited her passion for acting after spending years away from film.
The 37-year-old star appears in the new movie directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal alongside Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale.
Speaking at the film’s US premiere in New York City on March 3, Hough said she felt honoured to return to film with such a high-profile project.
“Well, first and foremost, this movie is not a musical, but there has been movement, and it’s fun,” she said. “It’s expressive, it gets explosive, and everybody is just outrageously good at what they do.”
“To be at this caliber of talent with this incredible film, for it being the first film I’ve done in many, many years, I am so honored,” she added.
Hough previously appeared in films including Safe Haven, Burlesque, Footloose, and Rock of Ages. In recent years, she has been best known for co-hosting Dancing with the Stars alongside Alfonso Ribeiro since 2023.
Explaining what drew her back to acting, Hough said the film’s message about women’s voices resonated deeply with her.
“I think the message of women’s voices being heard in a new way. I couldn’t imagine a better way and time to have that come through,” she said.
Hough also praised Gyllenhaal, saying she was particularly excited to work with the filmmaker.
“She is just so generous with her presence and her direction, making everybody feel so seen and valued, no matter how big or small your role is,” Hough said, noting that she has a small part in the film.
The Bride! is now playing in theatres.
