Google Maps launches biggest update in years

Google Maps has introduced what is being described as its most substantial upgrade in more than a decade, integrating real-time mapping data with the company’s advanced Gemini AI technology to reshape the way users explore locations and navigate routes.

The latest update brings two major innovations “Ask Maps,” a conversational feature designed to answer complex queries and “Immersive Navigation,” a revamped driving interface that offers a more detailed and interactive experience.

Ask Maps allows users to ask natural, real-world questions and receive personalised recommendations. Instead of simple location searches, people can ask queries such as where they can charge their phone without waiting in a crowded café or whether public tennis courts with lighting are available at night.

The feature relies on data from more than 300 million locations and insights from over 500 million contributors worldwide. By analysing users’ search history and saved places, it delivers tailored suggestions whether that means discovering hidden trails, identifying convenient meeting spots, or finding local events.

Ask Maps also enables users to take immediate actions, including making reservations, saving locations, sharing places with friends, or starting navigation directly. The feature is currently rolling out in the United States and India on Android and iOS devices, with desktop support expected soon.

Meanwhile, Immersive Navigation introduces a highly detailed 3D route preview, displaying surrounding buildings, terrain, and overpasses along with clear lane guidance, traffic lights, and stop signs to help drivers anticipate road conditions.

Powered by Gemini AI, which analyses Street View imagery and aerial data, the system also includes smart zooming, transparent building overlays, improved voice navigation, and real-time traffic insights generated from millions of updates every second.

Drivers will additionally see alternative routes and travel options highlighted, while arrival views now display parking areas, building entrances, and precise street positioning for easier navigation.

The new Immersive Navigation feature will be available on iOS and Android devices, as well as on CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles equipped with Google’s built-in systems, signalling a major step forward in AI-powered navigation technology.
