PESHAWAR:

With only a few days left until Eid, bustling markets in the city are witnessing a significant rush of shoppers eager to complete their festive preparations. After purchasing new clothes, residents are now turning their attention to the iconic Peshawari chappals, a traditional staple that complements Eid attire.

The historic Jahangirpura market remains the epicenter for authentic Peshawari chappal purchases. From morning until late at night, crowds, including children accompanying elders, throng the shops. Shoppers are selecting colorful variants to match their new outfits, favoring popular styles such as ‘panjey daar’, band high karam, single sole, and double sole designs.

The surge reflects the deep cultural attachment to these handcrafted leather sandals, known for their durability and distinctive Peshawari craftsmanship.

However, inflation has driven up prices considerably. Vendors report that the cost of raw materials, particularly leather and other components, has risen sharply. Compared to last year, prices have increased by Rs1,000 to Rs3,000 per pair.

What once cost Rs1,500 now sells for around Rs2,000; pairs previously priced at Rs2,000 are now Rs3,000, and those at Rs3,000 have climbed to Rs5,000 or more. Shopkeepers attribute the hike directly to escalating material costs amid broader economic pressures.

Despite the higher prices, demand remains robust, underscoring the chappal’s enduring popularity during Eid celebrations.

In a modern twist, Peshawari chappals are increasingly available online. Dedicated websites and e-commerce platforms allow customers to browse designs, make payments, and receive doorstep delivery across Pakistan. This shift has made it easier for those living outside Peshawar to purchase authentic pairs without visiting Jahangirpura market, with several specialized web pages catering specifically to this demand. Many expatriates and out-of-city residents are opting for online shopping to secure their Eid essentials.

As Eid approaches, the combination of tradition, style, and evolving retail options continues to define Peshawar’s festive shopping scene.
