Eating Too Much Salt: Short- and Long-Term Effects

Salt is an essential part of our diet, but consuming too much of it can harm the body. While small amounts help maintain fluid balance and support nerve and muscle function, excess salt can lead to several health problems over time.

In the short term, eating too much salt can cause bloating and water retention. You may feel thirsty more often because your body tries to balance the extra sodium by holding onto water. It can also temporarily raise blood pressure, especially in people who are sensitive to salt. Some individuals may experience headaches or feel puffy in the face, hands, or feet.

Over the long term, regularly consuming high amounts of salt can lead to serious health issues. One of the biggest risks is high blood pressure, which increases the chances of heart disease and stroke. Excess salt can also strain the kidneys, as they work harder to remove the extra sodium from the body. Over time, this may contribute to kidney disease. Additionally, too much salt may weaken bones by causing the body to lose calcium, increasing the risk of osteoporosis.

Reducing salt intake, choosing fresh foods over processed items, and checking food labels can help lower these risks and support overall health.
