On 26 December 2025, China reached a major infrastructure milestone, officially surpassing 50,000 kilometers in total operating distance with the opening of a new line that elevates its global standing position to a new level.
The recent achievements mark a major move for the world’s largest rail network, which is now-one fifth longer than the circumference of the Earth.
As reported by The Jakarta post, some homes were knocked down and displaced residents would receive 5,000 yuan (US$700) per household to relocate, in line with the compensation plan announced by local authorities in 2020 when construction began.
China’s rail network has expanded by around 32 % percent compared to 2020. The C9309 train operates at 350 km/h, outstripping Japan’s Shinkansen, which has a top operating speed of 320 kilometers per hour.
Beijing has been economically supporting railways in other Asian countries under its Belt and Road Initiative, which provides necessary infrastructure projects internationally; however, a number of plans have stalled due to controversial statements.
Nonetheless, China’s high-speed rail has surpassed a major milestone, marking a transition from rapid construction towards global dominance.
