Barbie Dream Fest criticised over event conditions amid comparisons to Willy Wonka Experience

Attendees criticise Barbie Dream Fest, citing poor organisation and mismatch with promotional material
Attendees at Barbie Dream Fest in Fort Lauderdale have voiced widespread dissatisfaction, with many comparing the event to the widely criticised Glasgow Willy Wonka Experience.
The festival, organised by Mattel and held from March 27 to 29, was promoted as a large-scale celebration of the Barbie brand, promising immersive attractions including an interactive Dream House, roller disco and themed installations. However, visitors reported that the reality did not match expectations set by marketing materials.
Images circulating online show minimal set design, including a simple façade of a pink house on a largely empty concrete floor and a small roller-skating area surrounded by barriers. Attendees also highlighted limited décor, loosely organised vendor stalls and a basic bike course marked with cones.
The event has drawn comparisons not only to the Willy Wonka Experience but also to other criticised gatherings such as DashCon and Fyre Festival. One attendee wrote on Reddit, “We got Dashconned yall,” reflecting broader frustration shared across social platforms.
Concerns have also been raised about ticket pricing. Single-day passes started at $72, while VIP packages ranged up to $452.50. Some attendees questioned the value of these packages, with one stating, “$250 for no extra perks and all we received for merch included in that was a spray hand sanitizer.” Another added, “The coveted ‘swag bag’ for the folks who paid over $400 was a plastic brush and hand sanitizer, no bag, no exclusive merch.”
Despite the criticism, some positive remarks focused on guest appearances. Serena Williams attended to receive an “Icon Award”, while speakers were described as making efforts to engage with audiences.
The event was produced in partnership with Mischief Management, which has previously faced scrutiny over fan conventions. For many attendees, the festival has become a case study in how high-profile events can fall short of expectations.
