AI-powered tennis robot could redefine game’s future

BEIJING: Robots are steadily making their way into various sectors but in sports, they have traditionally lagged behind humans. However, a new technological breakthrough suggests that this gap may soon begin to close.

In what sounds like a scene from a science fiction film, scientists have successfully developed a robot capable of playing tennis raising the possibility that future tournaments like Wimbledon Championships could one day feature matches between human players and robotic competitors.

The innovation comes from Chinese tech firm Galbot, whose experts collaborated using a robot developed by Unitree Robotics.

The robot, named Unitree G1, was trained to understand and replicate human movement patterns required for tennis.

Instead of relying on long and training sessions, researchers focused on teaching the robot how to interpret human motion allowing it to grasp the essential skills needed to play the game.

The results have been described as remarkable. During testing, the robot successfully returned tennis balls using a variety of techniques while playing against a human opponent.

Scientists say this approach could redefine how robots are trained for real-world physical tasks, bringing them closer to competing alongside humans in dynamic sports environments.
