AI adoption grows faster than internet globally

Artificial intelligence has quickly become a significant part of everyday life, with recent data showing that by the end of 2025, around 16% of the world’s working-age population was engaging with generative AI tools monthly just three years after entering the mass market.

A new dataset from Microsoft researchers reveals striking disparities across countries, highlighting how smaller, digitally proactive nations are emerging as global leaders in AI adoption. The study analyzed AI usage among users of Microsoft devices, tracking access to tools like ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, and Gemini across 147 economies.

The United Arab Emirates and Singapore top the rankings, with over 60% of their working-age populations using AI chatbots monthly. Norway, Ireland, and France also feature prominently. Government initiatives in the UAE and Singapore appear to have played a crucial role, demonstrating how early promotion can accelerate adoption.

South Korea stands out as the fastest-growing AI market, with usage among working adults increasing by 18.5 percentage points in six months. Viral AI-generated images and rapid enhancements in Korean-language AI models are fueling this surge.

While wealth influences AI adoption, it isn’t the only factor. The United States, despite its technological prowess, ranks only slightly above the Czech Republic and below Poland in user engagement. Conversely, India and countries like Jordan and Vietnam are adopting AI at rates that outpace their income levels.

The dataset also offers insights into DeepSeek, a Chinese open-source AI model that has gained significant traction, especially in regions with restrictions on U.S. technology. Countries such as China, Belarus, Cuba, Russia, and Iran have high usage rates of DeepSeek, which circumvents political barriers while incorporating Chinese censorship.

The findings underscore a vital lesson: technological leadership doesn’t automatically ensure widespread AI usage. Policy decisions, government promotion, and proactive strategies are shaping the global landscape of AI adoption, emphasizing that success in AI integration depends as much on political will as on wealth and technological capacity.
