A father and his two adult daughters were shot during a violent home invasion in Toronto’s affluent Bridle Path neighbourhood early Thursday, police said.
Three masked suspects carrying handguns and a hammer broke into a house on Hyde Park Circle, near Bayview and Lawrence avenues, at about 3:45 AM.
According to Toronto police, the suspects entered through a rear door and confronted a couple and their two daughters.
A struggle followed, during which the father and both daughters were shot. Another family member was struck with a hammer.
All four were taken to hospital. Police initially described two victims’ injuries as life-threatening, but later said they were considered life-altering. Two people remain in hospital.
Inspector Kristy Smith said the intruders demanded valuables, although investigators have not established whether anything was stolen.
The suspects escaped before emergency crews arrived, reportedly fleeing in an SUV. Police have not released descriptions of them.
Investigators are also examining whether a gunshot victim who arrived at a nearby hospital shortly afterwards is connected to the attack.
Police said there was no evidence so far that the home had been specifically targeted.
“We recognize how frightening and disturbing an incident like this is, not only for the victims but also for the residents and the entire community including the loved ones of the extended family. People should feel safe in their homes,” Smith said.
