At least three people have been killed and five others injured after a large volcanic rock formation collapsed in Turkey’s popular tourist destination of Cappadocia on Thursday.

The collapse occurred in the Goreme region, where part of a famous rock formation known as a fairy chimney broke away near a parking area at the entrance to the site.

Local governor Huseyin Kok said recent heavy rainfall was likely responsible for the incident.

Emergency services and rescue teams were deployed to the area, with authorities continuing to search through the debris for anyone who might be trapped.

“We hope that there are no other casualties. We are deeply saddened,” Kok said.

The governor confirmed that two of the three people killed were Turkish nationals. The identity and nationality of the third victim have not been disclosed.

Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced that an investigation had been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

Cappadocia, located in central Turkey, is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed destination known for its unusual volcanic rock formations.
