Italy has supported Elon Musk’s owned Tesla’s assisted driving in push for faster EU approval to boost innovation and road safety.

The announcement comes from Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini who vouched for a swift approval of assisted driving following a constructive conversation with CEO Elon Musk.

Salvini wrote on X, “Very positive and constructive conversation with Musk today.”

“Italy is looking with great interest at the opportunities offered by assisted driving technologies, with a focus on innovation and road safety, and supports a swift EU approval of Tesla Assisted Driving. Thanks for the exchange, Elon!”

Earlier Tesla rebranded the system to Tesla Assisted Driving which was formerly known as Full Self-Driving (FSD). The rebranding of the name in Europe was meant to address regulatory and naming concerns. It remains an SAE Level 2 driver assistance system requiring continuous human oversight.

With Italy representing 13% of the EU population, this political push adds momentum toward the qualified majority needed from 15 member states covering 65% of people, ten countries already on board to cover 14.3%.

Tesla has more than 100,000 customers using the system in Europe.

The availability of Tesla in the EU hinges on the Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles where a qualified majority vote is currently expected in December 2026.
