‘Below’ ending explained: Netflix creator addresses Season 2 possibilities

Creator Jesse McKeown has explained the finale while the production team has addressed the possibility of a 2nd season

Netflix’s Below, starring Josh Hartnett, concludes its six-episode run with a revelation about the mysterious sea creature and an ending that raises questions about the future.

Creator Jesse McKeown has explained the finale, while the production team has addressed the possibility of a second season.

The series follows Calvin Penney (Hartnett), a Newfoundland fisherman haunted by his father’s mysterious death.

When a sea creature threatens his community, Calvin joins forces with a visiting marine researcher to protect his family and uncover the truth.

In the finale, the creature is revealed to be a giant squid mother protecting eggs trapped inside an iceberg.

Calvin and his family help move the iceberg into deeper waters, saving the creature from a planned military attack.

The decision also allows Calvin to confront his past and recognise the creature’s determination to protect its family.

The ending reveals more icebergs at sea, suggesting that other creatures could remain undiscovered.

Speaking to TV Insider, McKeown said the final image had been planned from the beginning. He explained that the story was designed to feel complete while leaving questions about climate change and its consequences.

Executive producer Jessica Rhoades told TV Insider that the team had concentrated on delivering the strongest possible six-episode story.

Netflix has not announced plans for a second season. McKeown told Time, “If there’s another story to tell with these characters, great. But that’s not my intention.”

He also clarified that the ending was not simply a conventional cliffhanger, but a question about humanity’s future.

For now, Below remains a complete limited series, with its closing scenes reinforcing its themes of family, environmental change and the uncertain future facing vulnerable communities.
