John Steinbeck’s ‘East of Eden’ returns to top of book charts after Netflix adaptation
The classic 1952 novel has seen renewed interest as viewers turn to the original source material behind the new series
John Steinbeck’s East of Eden has returned to the top of the book charts following the release of Netflix’s new limited series adaptation starring Florence Pugh.
The classic 1952 novel has seen renewed interest as viewers turn to the original source material behind the new seven-episode series. Variety reports that East of Eden has become a No. 1 bestseller following the Netflix adaptation’s release.
Steinbeck’s novel is a multigenerational story set in California’s Salinas Valley and follows the intertwined lives of the Trask and Hamilton families. The book explores themes including family, free will, morality and the struggle between good and evil.
Netflix’s adaptation was created by Zoe Kazan, with Jeb Stuart serving as co-showrunner. Florence Pugh stars as Cathy Ames, while Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask and Mike Faist portrays Charles Trask. Hoon Lee also stars as Lee, the Chinese American cook whose role has been expanded in the series.
The new adaptation covers the story across seven episodes, allowing it to explore considerably more of Steinbeck’s novel than the previous 1955 film version. The series is now streaming on Netflix, giving audiences the opportunity to watch the adaptation before or after reading the original novel.
The renewed popularity of East of Eden highlights the continued impact of classic literature when it is brought to a new generation through major screen adaptations. With the Netflix series drawing attention to Steinbeck’s story, readers are once again turning to the novel that inspired it.
