BBC Boss says he watched a ‘pretty good’ AI-generated ‘Doctor Who’ episode
Brittin has previously said the BBC should experiment with AI while maintaining safeguards around its use
BBC director-general Matt Brittin has revealed that he watched an episode of Doctor Who that was entirely generated using artificial intelligence, describing the result as “pretty good”.
Brittin discussed the BBC’s approach to artificial intelligence as the broadcaster considers how the technology could be used across its programming and services. His comments come as the BBC explores new ways of working with AI while continuing to emphasise the importance of human creativity.
The BBC boss said he had seen the AI-generated Doctor Who episode and was impressed by what the technology was capable of producing. However, his comments do not indicate that the BBC is planning to replace conventional Doctor Who production with AI-generated episodes.
Brittin has previously said the BBC should experiment with AI while maintaining safeguards around its use. He has also stressed that he believes human creativity should remain central to the organisation’s work.
The comments arrive during an uncertain period for Doctor Who. The BBC announced earlier this year that it was putting the series out to competitive tender following the departure of showrunner Russell T Davies and production company Bad Wolf. The broadcaster also confirmed that there would be no Christmas special in 2026 as it considers the show’s longer-term future.
