Amelia Dimoldenberg takes aim at 'puppet' Ed Sheeran during 'SNL UK' monologue

Amelia Dimoldenberg used her SNL UK opening monologue to joke about Ed Sheeran, her Chicken Shop Date interviews and the lessons behind her career.

Dimoldenberg recently announced that Chicken Shop Date would be ending. Addressing the decision, she joked, “I found out something devastating. Apparently, these celebrities weren’t coming on to date me. They were coming on to promote their work!”

She then referenced Andrew Garfield, saying, “It makes so much more sense now. Andrew Garfield had a film out! When he kept saying, ‘I’m looking forward to the big release,’ I thought that was a sex thing.”

The monologue then turned to Sheeran, who has faced controversy after dropping Macklemore from his tour following a political speech in which Macklemore said “free Palestine”.

“I’m incredibly privileged to have done so many interviews with people like Idris Elba, Cher, and even a world famous red-headed puppet with a hand up his arse telling him what to say,” Dimoldenberg said, as an image of Elmo appeared.

“No, the other one!” she added as Sheeran’s face appeared on screen.

Dimoldenberg also reflected on her early experiences at a youth centre in London, saying, “I am an awkward girl, and there’s no shame in that. Just huge profit.”

She continued, “I am proof that you don’t have to stop being awkward to be successful … I am proof that you should always be yourself.”

She encouraged viewers to embrace that approach across Chicken Shop Date, the Oscars red carpet, The Devil Wears Prada 2, her upcoming rom-com and SNL UK.

“Just like the chickens I love to eat,” Dimoldenberg concluded, “you don’t have to have range.”
