Iceland has summoned the US ambassador after US President Donald Trump posted a map depicting the Arctic nation, Canada, Mexico and Greenland as part of the United States.
Trump shared the image on Truth Social over the holiday weekend, showing the US flag covering North America and nearby territories, offering no explanation for the post.
Icelandic Foreign Secretary Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir summoned US Ambassador Billy Long and made clear the post was unacceptable, according to national broadcaster RÚV.
The image also drew criticism from Denmark, which oversees the self-governing territory of Greenland.
“It’s disturbing and, in many ways, completely inappropriate,” Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen told broadcaster DR.
“It’s obviously a sign that the U.S. president still harbours some kind of maximalist vision in his own mind. We need to rein that in.”
Trump has repeatedly discussed US control of Greenland and previously suggested Canada could become the 51st state.
Iceland, a NATO member located about 290 kilometres from Greenland, has also faced similar rhetoric.
Long apologised earlier this year after joking about Iceland becoming the 52nd US state and himself becoming governor.
