Trump administration weighs new sweeping tariffs on semiconductor: Report

The Trump administration is considering imposing new and sweeping tariffs on semiconductors in a recent push as cited by people privy to the matter.

According to Politico as reported by familiar people, the new package of tariffs under consideration would dramatically target a great range of tech goods, expanding its scope beyond the chips.

Moreover, these potentially upcoming duties will also be applied to the products equipped with chips including gaming consoles, laptops and data center servers, as per report.

As per sources, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick would favor a structure. Under this structure, only those foreign companies would be relieved from the tariffs which would invest in the US chip manufacturing aimed at boosting domestic production.

According to four insiders, the administration is weighing a gradual rollout for the proposed tariffs.

However, they cautioned that the current framework could undergo significant changes as plans are finalized.

The confirmation of the possibility of tariffs has not yet been confirmed by the US Commerce Department and the White House.

If these tariffs are being pursued, the Trump administration’s ambition to win the global AI race would be jeopardized as establishing advanced chip factories on domestic level takes years and decades.

In May, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer slashed the possibility of new US tariffs expected to be imposed on semiconductors.
