The trade war between the United States and Canada is on an escalatory trajectory. In the midst of escalation, Canada announced plans to remove seafoods and fish products from a list of counter tariffs on US imports.
The announcement comes a day after Ottawa slammed levies on about $20 billion worth of American products.
Taking to X, Canada’s Department of Finance posted, “Based on feedback, we have made select adjustments to protect against economic harms, including removing seafood and fish products from our list of counter tariffs.”
“We are continually working with Canadian industries to assess the effectiveness of these measures, with a primary focus on industries that have been targeted by US tariffs,” the statement read.
The exclusion of seafood from the list of retaliatory tariffs comes over the heels of growing concerns raised by US lobster industries. They claimed that rising duties would increase their cost. On the other hand, the counter-tariffs could also provoke the Trump administration, giving them the reason to impose tariffs.
The tariffs indicate the trade war between the US-Canada as the latter pledged to match the former’s latest duties dollar for dollar after the US imposed new 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods last week.
The Canadian tariffs will take effect from September 8.
