BEIJING: A Chinese humanoid robot has surpassed Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt‘s 100-meter world-record time, according to Chinese media.
The humanoid robot, named Lightning and developed by a Chinese company, completed the 100-meter distance in 9.32 seconds, beating Bolt’s record of 9.58 seconds set in 2009.
Lightning reached a top speed of 14.5 meters per second during a trial event held ahead of the second World Humanoid Robot Games, which begin Saturday.
Bolt set the men’s 100-meter world record of 9.58 seconds at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. His record run averaged about 10.44 meters per second.
The robot’s performance highlights the rapid development of humanoid robotics and advances in robotic mobility and high-speed movement.
More read, Trump administration bans new Chinese humanoid robots
Earlier, the Trump administration on Tuesday announced a ban on the import of new foreign-made humanoid robots into the United States, saying the devices pose “unacceptable risks” to the country’s national security.
The ban covers advanced robots, including humanoid and four-legged machines, many of which are manufactured in China. China is one of the United States’ main competitors in the development of robotics and artificial intelligence.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) also banned the import of power inverters, which are commonly used in data centers and solar power systems. The agency said the devices could also pose a risk to the U.S. economy.
In response, the Chinese Embassy in Washington said Beijing opposes what it described as the United States’ practice of politicizing trade issues and imposing sanctions based on “groundless pretexts.”
