Cambridge University defends its handling of Jason Arday case: What to know

The University of Cambridge has defended the mental health support it provided to Professor Jason Arday after questions about the care he received during his time at the institution.

The university further underlined it had continued to provide Arday with comprehensive psychological care and safety protocols including installing panic alarms and monitoring hate speech detection after he resigned from his post as professor of sociology of education earlier this month.

The statement from a University of Cambridge spokesperson reads: “Our support continued in the face of intense public media and media scrutiny and after his resignation. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Jason’s family and loved ones at this difficult time.”

Earlier, The University of Cambridge has announced plans to launch an investigation into the recruitment process surrounding Jason Arday, who resigned in the midst of a plagiarism controversy.

He was appointed by its Faculty of Education and his teaching at the institution as the vice-chancellor called the case an exception.

In light of the ongoing controversy, the university confirmed it would continue its inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Jason Arday’s appointment and tenure following his resignation.

Andy Burnham also said the death of former Cambridge professor Jason Arday has been described as a “tragedy on so many levels.”

His comments came during a visit to Cornwall, “It’s not a moment for any rushing to judgment. It’s a moment for reflection, I would say reflecting on how things came to this.”

Furthermore, the family also released a statement that reads: “Jason was subjected to a campaign of sustained abuse for more than three years since he accepted the role of professor at Cambridge University by those leaving no stone unturned in their quest to undermine him.”
