Madelyn Cline recently shared a strange encounter with police as the officials mistook her for running an illegal operation while living in Spain.
The 28-year-old actress was staying alone in Madrid while filming her upcoming movie Day Drinker when police began repeatedly showing up at her apartment.
Speaking on the Therapuss podcast, she explained that officers seemed to believe she was in charge of some kind of organised group operating out of her building.
“Speaking of prostitutes, did I tell you the story about how when I was in Spain, I was working, and the police kept showing up to my apartment door? They thought I was the leader,” she began.
Cline said the situation became confusing and a little scary, especially since the officers mostly spoke Spanish, making it hard for her to fully understand what was happening. She said they kept asking for her passport and personal information.
The mystery was eventually solved with help from her co-star, Penelope Cruz, as during a casual conversation on set, Cruz asked how Cline was enjoying life in Madrid, and Cline explained the strange situation with police visiting her apartment.
It then turned out that Cruz used to live in the very same building years earlier, and after checking in with an old neighbour, she learned that the building had previously been linked to local criminal activity.
Cline later found out the police believed she was involved in running some kind of illegal operation.
“They thought that I was their fearless leader. I wasn’t. I was their fearful leader. I was accidentally elected. I wish they would have let me know because I would have been a lot braver about it.”
Cline clarified that she has no negative feelings toward “sex workers,” but wanted to make clear she had nothing to do with the situation.
