A powerful earthquake has struck the Pacific province of Choco in western Colombia, causing infrastructural damage and leaving people injured.

According to the report, the powerful tremors were felt as far away as Venezuela and the capital Bogota. The European Mediterranean ​Seismological ​Centre (EMSC) said the intensity of the quake was 6.8 magnitude and it was at a depth of 115km.

The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) reported that a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck at 7:34 a.m. at a depth of 79 km, and stated it is currently coordinating with local authorities to assess any potential damage.

Governor Nubia Carolina Cordoba-Curi posted on X, “We have just experienced a major earthquake in the department of Choco. We are concerned about aftershocks.”

Although the epicenter ​was near San Jose del ​Palmar, there are injuries and significant damage to ‌buildings ⁠in the capital, Quibdo. We are already carrying out a damage assessment and will issue the first ​official report ​shortly,” he wrote.
