
China: A Chinese man who experienced paralysis twice after spinal surgery has developed a prototype wheelchair controlled by brain signals, turning a life-changing personal struggle into an innovation aimed at improving mobility for people with disabilities.
Thirty-three-year-old Wang Ning, along with his wife, built the first prototype of the mind-controlled wheelchair in just 48 hours for a technology competition, where the project won first prize in the hardware category along with a 50,000 yuan cash award.
Wang was diagnosed with a 13-centimeter spinal tumor in 2020 and underwent two major surgeries that left him completely paralyzed twice.
At one point, he could move only his eyes while enduring severe nerve pain. He said his wife’s unwavering support motivated him to continue fighting through recovery until he was able to stand and walk again.
Inspired by his experience, Wang began developing technology to help people with paralysis regain greater independence.
Despite having a background in fine arts and no prior experience in coding or hardware development, he taught himself artificial intelligence and brain-computer interface technology in 2022 through books and online courses.
During an April 2026 technology challenge, Wang and his wife set out to build a working prototype within 48 hours. Early versions frequently collided with obstacles, but after refining the system using facial muscle signals, brain-wave recognition, and AI-powered algorithms, they created a functional mind-controlled wheelchair.
The prototype was showcased at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai in July.

Wang said the system now supports multidirectional mind control and can also operate connected devices such as lights, cameras, and air conditioners. In addition to the wheelchair, he has developed a navigation app designed for wheelchair users.
