MADRID: Spain captain Rodri has urged his teammates to approach Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final against Argentina with ambition rather than fear, describing the defending champions as “the team to beat” while insisting Spain are ready to chase football’s greatest prize.
Speaking at a news conference, Rodri said Spain’s journey to the final was the result of years of steady progress, following triumphs in the UEFA Nations League and the European Championship.
“We’ve been through a gradual process of growth, where we’ve seen a team mature over the last few years,” Rodri said. “We’re pleased with the journey the team has taken, but we’re not stopping there; our ambition goes much further.”
The Manchester City midfielder, who has also won the Ballon d’Or and the UEFA Champions League, said lifting the World Cup would be the pinnacle of his career.
“The greatest thing that can happen to you is to become world champion,” Rodri said. “I’m happy with my career, but there’s always that drive to keep going.”
Spain have conceded just one goal throughout the tournament, and Rodri credited the team’s balance in defense, midfield and attack. While acknowledging every team has weaknesses, he declined to reveal any tactical vulnerabilities ahead of the final.
Rodri praised Argentina’s resilience, highlighting the team’s ability to recover from difficult situations and their strong competitive mentality. He said Spain must remain true to its style of play while showing the determination needed to win the title.
Calling Lionel Messi “the greatest player of all time,” Rodri said Spain would closely monitor the Argentine captain but stressed that the South American side’s strength extends well beyond one player.
“For me, he’s the greatest player of all time,” Rodri said. “But Argentina is much more than just Messi. We’ll have to keep an eye on him, but also on many others.”
Rodri also predicted Sunday’s final would be more physical than Spain’s 2-0 semifinal victory over France and said the team must be prepared for a demanding contest.

Reflecting on Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning squad, he said the current generation hopes to emulate its determination while writing its own chapter in Spanish football history.
