U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to “decimate and destroy” Iran if Tehran acts on threats to assassinate him, as the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned an alleged Iranian financier.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that “1000 Missiles are Locked and Loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, with thousands of more to immediately follow, should the Iranian Government act on its threat, pronounced in many corners of the Globe, to assassinate, or attempt to assassinate, the sitting President of the United States of America, in this case, ME!”
He added that “orders have already been given” and said the U.S. military is “ready, willing, and able” for one year, with the option to extend the mission, “to completely decimate and destroy all areas of Iran.”
Trump earlier said the ceasefire with Iran was “over,” but the United States agreed to continue talks after Tehran requested further negotiations.
Israel recently shared intelligence with the United States indicating that Iran had developed a new plan to assassinate Trump, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
In June, Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding, or MoU, under Pakistan’s mediation to end the war that began in late February and work toward a lasting peace agreement.
The MoU called for an immediate end to fighting on all fronts, the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade on Iran, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
However, both sides exchanged attacks this week over the passage of commercial shipping through the strait. The United States struck targets in Iran, and Iran responded by targeting U.S. assets across the region.
