Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has received an enthusiastic response from critics following its first press screenings, with early reviews praising the scale of the epic adaptation and the performances of its ensemble cast.
The Oscar-winning director’s adaptation of Homer’s classic tale has been described as one of the year’s standout releases, with critics highlighting its ambitious storytelling, visual spectacle and large-format filmmaking.
Collider’s Perri Nemiroff called the film “A filmmaking feast,” adding, “A grand and gripping rendition of Homer’s epic, and one that feels uniquely Christopher Nolan. It’s sincerely hard to imagine any other filmmaker on the planet being able to bring that source material to screen with this much scale, scope and heart.”
Discussing Film managing editor Andrew J. Salazar described the production as “a staggering achievement”, while film journalist Simon Thompson wrote, “Flawless filmmaking, every inch as epic as you’d expect.” He also praised Matt Damon’s lead performance and said Robert Pattinson was “outstanding” as Antinous.
Variety awards editor Jazz Tangcay called the film “an astonishing achievement” and “a triumphant, spectacular epic”, while awards columnist Clayton Davis wrote, “Matt Damon leads with grit, while Tom Holland brings the sensitivity and heart… It’s another hit for Nolan, one his die-hards will digest for decades to come.”
Fandango’s Erik Davis also singled out Pattinson’s performance, writing, “He’s so conniving, manipulative and endlessly entertaining to watch.” He added that the film is “an absolute triumph and a crowning cinematic achievement from one of the great filmmakers of our time.”
The film stars Damon as Odysseus, charting the hero’s journey home after the Trojan War alongside Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Tom Holland as Telemachus. The cast also includes Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page and Jon Bernthal.
The Odyssey is the first narrative feature filmed entirely with IMAX cameras and will be released in cinemas on July 17.
