HONG KONG: ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming has overtaken Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani to become Asia’s second-richest person, according to the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
The ranking by Bloomberg Billionaires Index shows Zhang’s net worth has surged to around $92.8 billion, driven by a sharp rise in ByteDance’s valuation amid strong global demand for its products.
He is now second only to India’s Gautam Adani, whose wealth is estimated at about $97.9 billion.
Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, has reportedly slipped to third place with an estimated net worth of $86.9 billion.
The rise in Zhang’s fortune is attributed to ByteDance’s expanding global popularity, particularly the continued dominance of its short-video platform TikTok, as well as rapid growth in the company’s artificial intelligence ventures. Its AI chatbot Doubao has reportedly attracted more than 300 million monthly users in China.
Bloomberg data indicates that a recent increase in ByteDance’s valuation, supported by growing investor confidence and developments in its US operations, added more than $24 billion to Zhang’s personal wealth.
Zhang co-founded ByteDance in 2012 and has seen his net worth multiply more than sevenfold since Bloomberg began tracking his wealth in 2019.
