Karl Lagerfeld’s cat Choupette reportedly ‘broke’ amid $1.5 million inheritance dispute

7 years after the designer’s death, Choupette’s caretaker claims she received no inheritance yet
Karl Lagerfeld’s cat Choupette has reportedly not received any of the inheritance once linked to the late designer’s estate despite earlier claims suggesting millions would be set aside for her care.
When Karl Lagerfeld died in 2019, reports suggested his cat could inherit as much as $195 to $300 million, alongside a separate $1.5 million fund intended to ensure lifelong care.
The cat’s caretaker, Françoise Caçote, told The Atlantic that she has had to pursue legal action while continuing to care for Choupette.
She said, “I have had to hire expensive lawyers to claim the inheritance in my name and ensure that Karl’s wishes are properly respected,” and added, “While things are being sorted out, I’m doing my best to honour his wishes, especially that Choupette wants for nothing. That’s my top priority.”
In addition, Caçote said she continues to balance work alongside caring responsibilities, explaining that Choupette receives full care and attention while legal matters continue. She said: “In addition to caring for her, I work part-time to support her. She receives all the love, attention, and care she needs.”
Caçote also reflected on public scrutiny, saying, “I’m always afraid of being judged.” She added that Choupette remains happy at home and well cared for.
Choupette was adopted in 2011 and became one of the most famous pets in circles after Lagerfeld developed an attachment to her.
