Apple tests AI AirPods with built-In cameras for smarter Siri

Apple is reportedly gearing up to take its AirPods to an entirely new level blending wearable technology with artificial intelligence in one of its most ambitious hardware upgrades yet.

According to a report the tech giant is in the final stages of testing a new generation of AirPods as part of its broader AI hardware strategy.

The company is said to be conducting advanced internal trials of AirPods equipped with miniature cameras designed to help Siri better understand a user’s surroundings and deliver more context-aware assistance.

The report citing journalist Mark Gurman, stated that Apple employees are currently testing prototype units that have reached the Design Validation Testing (DVT) phase a key milestone just before Production Validation Testing (PVT), where early mass-production models are developed.

Each earbud is expected to feature a compact camera that would effectively act as a visual input system for Siri. While the design is likely to remain close to the current AirPods Pro style, slight modifications such as longer stems may be introduced to accommodate the new hardware.

These cameras are not intended for photography or video recording. Instead, they would capture low-resolution environmental data to enhance Siri’s contextual understanding of the user’s surroundings.

This could enable more intelligent responses from the assistant such as suggesting recipes based on visible ingredients or offering navigation assistance using nearby landmarks.

The report also highlights that Apple is actively working on privacy-focused features, as concerns grow around camera-enabled wearable devices.

One of the measures under consideration includes an LED indicator that would light up whenever the cameras are active, similar to systems used in devices like Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. However, questions remain over how effective such indicators would be in practice, given that the AirPods sit inside the ear.

Bloomberg noted that these AirPods form part of Apple’s expanding AI hardware ecosystem. The company is also reportedly developing smart glasses and a pendant-style wearable device equipped with cameras.

These upcoming products are expected to launch next year, while the AI-focused AirPods could be introduced later this year.

The report comes as Apple CEO Tim Cook prepares to transition leadership duties to hardware chief John Ternus on September 1.

Ternus is expected to oversee several major upcoming releases, including a foldable iPhone, a touchscreen MacBook, and a new wave of AI-driven devices.
