Elizabeth Smart’s trainer outlines routine and mindset behind ‘Fitness Barbie’ transformation

Smart recently opened up about her bodybuilding journey, sharing a competition photo and personal reflections

Elizabeth Smart’s recent bodybuilding competition win has been detailed by her trainer, who described the preparation behind what she called a “Fitness Barbie” transformation.

Smart secured first place in her category at the 2026 Wasatch Warrior event after a period of consistent training and personal commitment.

Trainer Robyn Maher explained that the activist approached the process with determination and a focus on self-improvement.

Speaking to Extra TV, Maher said, “She decided on her own, ‘I really want to speak out about this.’ She feels really proud of it.” She added that Smart viewed the journey as a positive example, saying, “My body’s done amazing things for me, and this is just one more way that I can, you know, set goals, accomplish something, be an example to other women.”

Maher also praised her client’s dedication, noting, “She’s gorgeous. I keep calling her Fitness Barbie. That’s my nickname for her.” She emphasised that Smart’s success was earned, stating, “She didn’t get any top award just because she’s Elizabeth Smart. It was fair and square.”

The 38-year-old had previously competed in three bodybuilding events, initially doing so without public attention.

Maher explained, “She wasn’t looking for any attention. Just wanted to do it for herself and set that goal.” Over time, Smart developed a stronger interest in the sport, with Maher recalling, “She said, ‘I think I want to do this again, like, I’ve seen what I’ve accomplished. I feel stronger.’”

To prepare for the competition, Smart followed a structured routine that included weight training up to six days a week and a disciplined nutrition plan. Maher highlighted her physical capability, saying, “That woman can squat a lot of weight.”

Smart acknowledged initial hesitation in sharing her achievement publicly, citing concerns about judgement, but ultimately expressed pride in her progress and commitment.

Widely known for her work supporting trauma survivors, Smart has also spoken about her experiences following her 2002 abduction, explaining her decision to share her story publicly in order to give it meaning and purpose.
