Timely measures averted energy crisis amid regional tensions: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that timely government measures have prevented an energy crisis in the country despite the prevailing regional situation.

The remarks came during a high-level meeting on energy security chaired by the premier, which was attended by key federal ministers and senior officials.

Addressing the meeting, the prime minister emphasized that energy security has become a critical component of Pakistan’s overall future planning.

He noted that proactive steps taken by the government ensured stability in the energy sector amid regional uncertainties.

Shehbaz Sharif said work is underway on plans to maintain strategic reserves of crude oil to meet future needs.

He also stressed the importance of transitioning transport systems towards environmentally friendly electric solutions, including the procurement of electric buses and motorcycles for official use, and the expansion of EV charging infrastructure.

The prime minister further directed authorities to formulate a strategy to facilitate battery storage for surplus solar energy and encourage local production of high-quality storage batteries.

During the briefing, officials informed the meeting that the National Coordination and Management Council is monitoring the situation on a daily basis.

It was also highlighted that the country currently has sufficient petroleum reserves and a stable food security situation.

Officials added that efforts by oil and gas companies are contributing to increased domestic production, while household solar users are being encouraged to adopt battery storage systems to enhance energy efficiency.
