Kash Patel under scrutiny over claims of erratic behaviour and drinking concerns as FBI director

Kash Patel is facing scrutiny after a report by The Atlantic raised concerns about his behaviour and conduct as FBI director.

The outlet reported that more than two dozen sources, including current and former FBI officials and members of Congress, described Patel as “erratic, suspicious of others, and prone to jumping to conclusions before he has necessary evidence.”

According to the report, some also characterised his personal conduct as “a national-security vulnerability.”

One official quoted in the report said that the prospect of Patel leading during a major crisis, particularly amid tensions involving Iran, “keeps me up at night.”

The report also alleged concerns about alcohol use, stating Patel is “known to drink to the point of obvious intoxication.”

It further claimed that meetings had been “rescheduled for later in the day as a result of his alcohol-fueled nights,” and that on some occasions, “members of his security detail had difficulty waking Patel because he was seemingly intoxicated.”

Sources also said he had been “unreachable behind locked doors,” causing concern among colleagues.

Responding to the allegations, Patel strongly denied the claims. He told The Atlantic: “Print it, all false, I’ll see you in court — bring your checkbook.”

The report adds that internal discussions are reportedly ongoing about leadership at the FBI, although no official decisions have been announced.
