47th death anniversary of PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto

The 47th death anniversary of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a statesman of remarkable stature and enduring influence is being solemnly commemorated today.

His legacy, defined by vision, courage, and political foresight, continues to resonate across generations.

Born on 5 January 1928 in Larkana, Bhutto was a man of exceptional intellect and global outlook. He pursued his education at the University of California and later at the University of Oxford, where he refined the ideas that would later shape Pakistan’s political destiny.

Bhutto entered national politics as Foreign Minister in 1963 under General Ayub Khan, distinguishing himself through his assertive diplomacy and commitment to Pakistan’s sovereignty.

Following ideological differences he founded the Pakistan Peoples Party on 30 November 1967 laying the foundation of a political movement that would come to embody the aspirations of the masses.

He served as President of Pakistan from 1971 to 1973 and subsequently as Prime Minister from 1973 to 1977. During his tenure, Bhutto steered the nation through a period of profound uncertainty, restoring public confidence and redefining Pakistan’s place on the global stage.

His most enduring achievements include the promulgation of the 1973 Constitution and the initiation of Pakistan’s nuclear programme. He also sought to foster unity among Muslim nations in the face of global power imbalances.

Bhutto’s political journey, however, met a tragic end when he was executed on 4 April 1979 following a controversial trial. In March 2024, Pakistan’s Supreme Court observed that the proceedings against him had not met the standards of a fair trial, reinforcing longstanding concerns regarding the case.

In his message marking the occasion, President Asif Ali Zardari described Bhutto as a central figure in Pakistan’s political history, noting that his leadership in the aftermath of 1971 played a vital role in restoring national confidence.

He further termed the 1973 Constitution as one of Bhutto’s most enduring contributions, emphasising that his policies and institutional reforms continue to shape the country’s strategic direction.

Though decades have passed since his demise, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto remains an enduring symbol of resolve, vision, and democratic aspiration his legacy continuing to inspire those who seek a stronger and more equitable Pakistan.
