Will markets close at 8 PM across Pakistan? Final decision still pending

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has begun preparations for potential early market closures across Pakistan possibly taking effect at 8 PM, as part of a broader strategy to curb fuel and electricity consumption.

However, officials confirmed that no conclusive decision has been taken yet, and the proposal remains under review.

The measure is designed to alleviate peak-hour energy demand, reduce urban traffic congestion, and strike a balance between commercial activity and public convenience.

Provincial authorities are currently being consulted, and the final decision will be taken after comprehensive discussions involving the Prime Minister, all four chief ministers, and military leadership to ensure coordinated implementation.

Government sources highlighted that global fuel supplies have been disrupted due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, instigated by the United States and Israel, resulting in unprecedented fuel price surges.

In response, Pakistan has adopted a pragmatic conservation policy, which has already seen steps such as limiting non-essential vehicle use in government offices and introducing Saturday holidays in schools.

Officials stressed that any nationwide rollout of early market closures will proceed only after thorough coordination with provincial authorities to minimize disruption for businesses and the general public.
