The racing world has been rocked by tragedy as unbeaten star hurdler Sir Gino tragically passed away at the age of six, marking the loss of one of the sport’s most extraordinary and promising champions.
Renowned British trainer Nicky Henderson confirmed the heartbreaking news, revealing that the multiple Grade 1 winner had to be humanely put down at a veterinary hospital after his condition deteriorated beyond recovery.
Sharing the news on X (formerly Twitter), Henderson said, “We have very sadly lost the battle to save Sir Gino,” describing the moment as a devastating loss for the entire team.
The champion horse had been battling a severe and deep-seated infection. Although he had previously overcome similar health issues and made a remarkable comeback in the Christmas Hurdle, this time the infection proved too aggressive and widespread, despite his earlier pelvic injury showing signs of recovery.
Sir Gino’s career was nothing short of extraordinary as he remained unbeaten in all seven starts, securing three prestigious Grade 1 victories. He also delivered a commanding performance in a Grade 2 race during his only outing over fences.
Paying tribute, Henderson described him as one of the finest horses he had ever trained, calling him “truly unforgettable in every sense.”
His untimely death leaves a profound void at Seven Barrows and has deeply saddened his owners, Joe and Marie Donnelly, along with the wider racing community, who have lost a rare and exceptional talent far too soon.
