Project Hail Mary breaks 2026 box office records

LOS ANGELES: Ryan Gosling’s latest sci-fi epic, Project Hail Mary has combined cinematic ambition with real-world success, delivering the biggest box office opening of 2026 so far.

The La La Land star endured long stretches of near isolation on set, acting alone or alongside an alien character, Rocky, who becomes the only companion of his character, Dr. Ryland Grace. “Many times, I was locked into the set for hours with only an earwig,” Gosling told Reuters. “The directors communicated with me via mic, experimenting constantly. It’s not a typical blockbuster it thrives on scale without overwhelming itself.”

Directed by the Spider-Verse duo Philip Lord and Christopher Miller, the film adapts Andy Weir’s bestselling novel. It follows Grace, a mild-mannered science teacher who awakens alone on a spaceship and gradually realizes he is humanity’s last hope to save the dying sun. His mission takes an unexpected turn when he forms a deep bond with an alien companion.

Behind the scenes, Gosling and the cast were supported by experts. “We had molecular biologists and astronauts advising us throughout,” Gosling said. Beyond acting, he also helped shape the project as a producer after receiving Weir’s unpublished manuscript. “This film has demanded a lot from me, but it’s been worth every moment. Six years of work led to an unforgettable experience,” he added.

The film’s box office performance mirrors its creative ambition. Project Hail Mary raked in $80.5 million domestically during its opening weekend, setting a 2026 record and breaking Amazon MGM Studios’ previous high set by Creed III ($58 million). Its global total now stands at $140.9 million.

Kevin Wilson, Amazon MGM’s distribution chief, said, “The audience energy, word-of-mouth, and exit scores reflect exactly what we expected from this film.”

The debut also marks the biggest opening for directors Lord and Miller and becomes Gosling’s second-highest career launch behind Barbie ($162 million).

Produced at an estimated $200 million, with additional marketing costs, Project Hail Mary continues to dominate theaters worldwide.
