The announcement was made by Illumination chief executive and producer Chris Meledandri during a Nintendo Direct livestream on Monday, where a new trailer for the film was also revealed.
Additional new cast members include Luis Guzman as Wart and Issa Rae as Honey Queen, expanding the ensemble behind the Nintendo-inspired adventure.
Chris Pratt returns to voice Mario, who heads into space in the follow-up to the 2023 hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Returning cast members include Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
The sequel also introduces several characters familiar to fans of the video game franchise. Benny Safdie will voice Bowser Jr., while Brie Larson joins the film as Princess Rosalina, a character who first appeared in the 2007 video game Super Mario Galaxy.
The story follows Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach as they embark on another adventure after defeating Bowser in the original film. The trio once again confront the Koopa King, this time alongside his son, while travelling beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and into outer space.
Their journey takes them across a series of unusual planets, including a volcanic world, an underwater realm and a futuristic environment filled with neon obstacles and gravity-defying challenges. In the trailer, the heroes join forces with Rosalina and Yoshi, the egg-laying dinosaur known for his limited speech and distinctive call of “Yoshi!”.
Wart and the Honey Queen appear as adversaries in the sequel, alongside the fan-favourite character Birdo.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and will be released in cinemas on April 1 by Universal, Illumination and Nintendo.
