Christina Applegate reveals she ditched Brad Pitt for Sebastian Bach at 1989 MTV VMAs

In her new memoir, Applegate reflects on attending the ceremony with Pitt and leaving with the Skid Row frontman
Christina Applegate has revealed that she left Brad Pitt at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards after bringing him as her date, choosing instead to leave the ceremony with Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach.
In her new memoir, You With the Sad Eyes, the 54-year-old actress reflects on attending the Los Angeles ceremony at the height of her Married… with Children fame. She was 17 at the time and described Pitt as someone she had been “platonic pals for the longest time.”
Applegate wrote that she felt “incredible” in a Ceil Chapman gown and added, “In fact, I felt so powerful and sure of myself for once that when the awards show was over, I left with Sebastian Bach, not Brad Pitt.”
She explained that she had been watching Bach throughout the evening, noting that Pitt “was still making his way as an actor, and he wasn’t yet THE Brad Pitt, the man of so many people’s dreams.” Pitt’s breakthrough role would follow in 1991 with Thelma & Louise.
According to Applegate, Pitt “was left to sullenly drive” her mother and a friend home after the ceremony. She wrote, “Not surprisingly, [he] was subsequently very mad at me. We didn’t talk for many years after that.”
She added that they later reached an understanding, writing, “Eventually, we agreed that I’d been a kid, and though he’d deserved much better, it was time to forgive the child who dumped him for the lead singer of Skid Row.”
Applegate previously addressed the long-standing rumour during a 2015 appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen but declined to name the mystery man at the time. She confirmed then that the person was famous but not an actor and that they did not date afterwards.
Her memoir also explores her childhood, motherhood and health challenges, including breast cancer and multiple sclerosis.
