Senegal’s AFCON triumph overshadowed by disciplinary concerns

Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations victory has been accompanied by uncertainty after the team’s actions during the final against Morocco triggered a disciplinary review by football’s governing bodies.

The issue arose late in Sunday’s final when Morocco were awarded a penalty following a VAR review. In response, Senegal’s players temporarily left the field in protest before returning to resume the match.

Morocco missed the penalty, sending the contest into extra time, where Senegal scored the decisive goal to secure a 1-0 win and claim their second AFCON title in three editions.

Despite the result, the walk-off has attracted criticism from FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Senegal head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw, who instructed his players to leave the pitch, along with several team officials, is expected to face disciplinary proceedings.

The development is of particular concern for Senegal ahead of the FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place in June across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Potential sanctions could lead to suspensions affecting Senegal’s campaign, including their opening matches against France and Norway in New York.

Thiaw later expressed regret over his decision, though his post-match press conference was cut short amid criticism from Moroccan journalists. In a subsequent television interview, he acknowledged that instructing the players to leave the field was a mistake.

CAF confirmed it is reviewing footage of the incident and stated that disciplinary action will follow.

“CAF condemns the unacceptable behaviour from certain players and officials,” the governing body said. “The matter has been referred to the appropriate bodies for further action.”
