DG ISPR to brief media on security situation today

The 2025 report recorded 3,417 violence-linked fatalities and 2,134 injuries among civilians, security personnel.

Rawalpindi: Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director-General (DG) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry is set to address a press conference today at 2pm to brief the media on the prevailing security situation and other key matters.

The press briefing comes amid a sharp rise in terrorist activities in Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan, which have witnessed increasing violence since the return of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan in 2021.

Recent incidents highlight the growing security challenges. On Monday, an improvised explosive device (IED) targeted a cement factory vehicle in Lakki Marwat district, killing one person and injuring nine others, including two women. On Sunday, four policemen were martyred in separate firing incidents by unidentified assailants in Lakki Marwat and Bannu districts.

According to the annual security report by the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), Pakistan experienced a 34% surge in overall violence in 2025, making it the most violent year in a decade. The report notes that the country has faced a sustained escalation in violence for five consecutive years since 2021, with violent incidents and fatalities rising sharply each year.

The 2025 report recorded 3,417 violence-linked fatalities and 2,134 injuries among civilians, security personnel, and outlaws resulting from 1,272 incidents, including terrorist attacks and counter-terrorism operations. This reflects a continuing upward trend from 2,555 fatalities recorded in 2024.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bore the brunt of the attacks, with fatalities rising from 1,620 in 2024 to 2,331 in 2025—an increase of 711 deaths, accounting for over 82% of the national rise in violence. Balochistan also saw a sharp increase, with fatalities climbing from 787 to 956, a nearly 22% rise. Combined, KP and Balochistan accounted for over 96% of all fatalities and almost 93% of violent incidents in the country during 2025.

The military’s spokesperson is expected to provide detailed updates on security measures and counter-terrorism efforts during today’s briefing.
