China marriage registrations hit 18-year low, worsening birth rate crisis: report

According to data released by China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs, marriage registrations for the first nine months of the year dropped to 4.65 million couples down 9.8% or about 504,000 couples compared to the same period in the previous year.

This marks the lowest level in 18 years, reversing a brief rebound seen the prior year. During the same nine-month stretch, 2.08 million couples filed for divorce.

Worsening birth rate crisis:

Because childbearing in China remains heavily tied to formal marriage, the continuous slide heavily threatens future birth rates.

This compounds a wider demographic crisis: China’s population has shrunk for consecutive years, fueled by a rapidly aging society, a shrinking workforce, and economic pressures—persisting despite state-level childcare subsidies, tax incentives, and policy pushes to encourage family planning.

The broader crisis:

China’s marriage rate for the first nine months of this year plummeted to its lowest level, fueling concerns about declining births ‌and demographic strain in a country where childbearing remains closely tied to wedlock.

Plunging nearly 10% in the first nine months of the year, data from the Ministry of Civil Affairs underscores a deepening demographic threat despite aggressive state incentives.
